Bobo & Behaja (FRA, MAD)
The Bobo & Behaja formation, rooted in Madagascar, introduced the audience of the House of Music’s Open-Air Stage in the summer of 2024 to a musical tradition that counts as a true rarity even in the world of global music. After their highly successful concert, Bobo & Behaja were selected for the official programme of WOMEX 2025, and now they return to the House of Music.
The genre called tsapiky, which grows out of the encounter between the village traditions of the largest African island nation and modern African music, creates a sound unlike anything else – yet highly captivating – through wild rhythms, winding guitar motifs and soaring saxophone lines. The band’s two namesakes are the French saxophonist Maxime Bobo, known in Hungary as well from concerts with the jazz band Electric Vocuhila, and Behaja, the guitarist of the Madagascan tsapiky group that bears his name. Alongside their joint playing, the band’s drummer and young singer also play key roles, but this music, deeply rooted in tradition yet thoroughly modern, is truly irresistible live; it is basically impossible to listen to it sitting still – you have to move to it.
About the tsapiky genre:
Tsapiky is a musical style born at the end of the 1970s from the encounter of village traditions and modern African music, whose leading instrument is the electric guitar. It is played mainly in the southwestern part of Madagascar, at ceremonies organized to celebrate weddings, funerals and other events, during which the musicians perform from morning until dawn, sometimes over several consecutive days.
