When a common noun (“kaláka”, meaning a cooperative work party) becomes a proper name, there is always some exciting story behind it. And if more people know the proper name (Kaláka) than its original meaning, then it is nothing short of a miracle. This is the miracle we would like to present on the stage of the House of Music, as we devote an entire day to paying tribute to this justly renowned band. Following the family program in the morning and the screening of the film about the band – Kaláka: From the Carpathians to the Caribbean – the evening concert will feature frequently played hits as well as rarely performed wonder-songs. We are looking forward to an unforgettable Kaláka Day on Saturday, 27 September at the House of Music!

Kaláka’s body of work is incomprehensibly rich: a long line of wonderful songs written to the poems of outstanding poets, musical settings of children’s poems, the melodic world of the Hungarian Folk Tales series, other film and television scores, unforgettable concerts, popular education, and of course an outpouring of love. Kaláka is in the DNA of the Hungarian people. For several generations, they represented the first gateway into the world of good music in childhood. Several generations know the defining Hungarian poems by heart thanks to them. They have hundreds of songs that are timeless and will endure in the decades and centuries to come. As the closing event of Kaláka Day, the evening concert will present a cross-section of this oeuvre, somewhat in the spirit of the band’s You Wanted It! performances, where the concert program is shaped by the audience’s votes. Only this time it was the House of Music that proposed an extensive selection, from which Kaláka compiled a program in which, alongside frequently played popular songs, we will also hear compositions that are performed more rarely.
