20th Anniversary Concert of the Szent István Music School's Wind Orchestra

This programme is held in Hungarian.

The Saint Stephen King Secondary School of Music is one of the largest and most successful secondary music schools in Hungary, whose wind orchestra is celebrating the twentieth anniversary of its existence this year. Under the direction of Pál Makovecz, the ensemble has given nearly two hundred concerts over these two decades, and their repertoire has by now included almost the same number of masterpieces, ranging from arrangements of classical symphonic works to original pieces for wind orchestra.

The size of the orchestra is around seventy to eighty members, depending on the number of students in the school’s wind and percussion departments. Each year they present a program consisting of major works in their own concert in the Müpa concert hall, but they also give regular open-air concerts; since the opening of the House of Music, they have performed every summer on the Outdoor Stage there as well. This year their program will be a kind of summary of the most successful pieces from the major concerts of the past twenty years: Franz Liszt’s well-known rhapsody will be followed by Duettino, a work by the 19th-century flute virtuoso Ferenc Doppler, who likewise drew on Hungarian themes, with solos by Gréta Turai and Emilia Rosario. After that, the overture to Carl Maria von Weber’s opera Der Freischütz will be performed, followed by Fantasia for Trumpet by Frigyes Hidas, in which Emma Horváth plays the solo part. Finally, the program will close with another popular classic, the Pomp and Circumstance Marches by the English composer Edward Elgar.
