Alela Diane (USA)

One of the most unique voices in contemporary folk, Alela Diane will perform in Budapest for the first time, on the stage of the House of Music, to present her latest album, Who’s Keeping Time?, to be released in May 2026. In the early 2000s, with her album The Pirate’s Gospel, the singer-songwriter burst onto the contemporary folk/indie-folk scene; encouraged by Joanna Newsom, she first took to the stage, was a member of the indie-folk duo Headless Heroes, and in addition to her solo work – such as the excellent 2009 album To Be Still – she has also released numerous collaborative records. Her songs have appeared in TV series such as The Walking Dead, and she has featured on tribute albums of artists like Queens Of The Stone Age and Townes Van Zandt. In Hungary, we will hear her for the first time with both her new songs and her classics.

The Portland-based songwriter’s seventh full-length album released under her own name is a work drawing on deeply personal and communal experiences. The birth of the album was also inspired by the death of legendary folk musician Michael Hurley, which for Alela meant not only a loss but also a kind of new beginning. Grief was transformed into community – and from this community a new musical era was born.
The uniqueness of Who’s Keeping Time? lies in the fact that the songs were written in the attic of a 19th-century house and then recorded live, almost immediately, with fellow musicians. The result is an intimate yet rich soundscape: dreamy, raw, and cinematic at the same time. Alela’s velvety, lyrical voice guides us through the songs, which explore the themes of loss, presence, and rediscovery.

The concert will be a celebration of delicate acoustic folk and the magic of live music – an evening where even the silences carry weight, and every sound bears a personal story. If you like artists such as Joni Mitchell or Joan Baez, this is an evening you should not miss.
