The World of Sci-fi

This program will be held in Hungarian.

Intergalactic space battles accompanied by a large orchestra, post-apocalyptic deserts punctuated by powerful industrial metal beats, modem sounds combined with sensitive, refined melodies illustrating the alienated everyday life of a not-so-distant future, or just the arrival of some brutal, unidentified space object on Earth, supported by indecipherable, noisy musical textures... Whether it's utopia, dystopia, space opera, cyberpunk, or time-traveling sci-fi, expressing the possible future in music is a huge task and a wonderful challenge.

Science fiction, in our case the world of science fiction films, has given rise to numerous technical and musical innovations in recent decades. During this time, a huge musical "glossary" has been compiled around the genre. Identifiable, recurring motifs have emerged. Each era and each new segment of the genre has left its mark on the practice of setting music to film. As is often the case with innovative solutions, popular curiosities of sci-fi music have migrated into everyday life, that is, from a genre appealing to a smaller audience into pop culture. In this lecture, we will examine the musical clichés associated with science fiction films and the innovations that preceded them, learning the basic musical language of sci-fi worlds. We will do this through films such as Forbidden Planet, Gattaca, Her, Interstellar, The Fifth Element, and, despite its fantasy elements, Star Wars, because leaving it out would send at least one Mandalorian bounty hunter after us... The performance is 90 minutes long, interactive, and, as usual, doesn't take anything as seriously as it should. The film music teleportation is led by László Pirisi and Petra Grisnik, straight into infinity and beyond...
