Two await the soul. The Lord Jesus awaits it, and so does the Devil. Invisible beings haunt us at the beginning of every new era. Returning home after a long journey is never easy. On the surface, everything is the same: a gendarme, an innkeeper, a bride, an outlaw. When someone dies, they must be buried. There is love, and wine, and grain, and the demons of grain. There is dancing, and there is play. The kind of play without which survival is impossible. But what happens when there is no one to entertain you? Interactive folk dance instruction, dramatic dance theater, folkloric absurdism, neo-folk play.
The performance takes the form of an interactive folk dance lesson, a dramatic dance house. At its center is how attention works: how it is distributed within a community, how it can be won, and how it shapes the group’s structure. The aim is for people to meet and become a community. During the performance, participants catch themselves moving with increasing confidence through the dances, music, and songs, until by the end it has become their own dance house.
The performance begins like any dance house: the audience arrives and, if necessary, changes clothes. The teaching begins, along with dancing together and getting to know the music. Then, all of a sudden, outlaws fill the room and start doing whatever they please. They make the innkeeper’s daughters dance, drink all the wine, and are both dangerous and captivating. And when the closing bell rings, they refuse to leave. As the story unfolds, new dance lessons begin one after another, opening up opportunities for participants to join the story, too.
