It seemed like a dreamlike story when the Hungarian ’56 refugee guitarist, in the midst of California dreamin’, forever played himself into the elite of the world’s second-best guitarists with his distinctive fusion jazz albums. DREAMS is one of the defining albums of this successful series, on which classical and folk music, jazz and pop-rock, the composer’s inner world and the external influences resonating within it harmonize with one another, “played together” with exceptional originality. The album by the world’s most acclaimed Hungarian jazz guitarist is heard in the setting of the exhibition commemorating him.

Unconventional occasion: our guests are Sándor Darányi, Gábor Szabó’s nephew, and Gergő Szőcs, founding drummer of the FLEMM formation that performs Szabó compositions, so we can get to know the legendary jazz guitarist better both through personal memories and through the inspirational power of his music.

Those of us who still remember how we used to listen to music back when Little Richard sang from shiny black vinyl discs also know what playing records gave music fans: time dedicated to listening to the music with deep absorption, printed lyrics to browse and memorable album covers. And there was even more, because the medium itself influenced the songwriting: the very designation of sides A and B of singles raised the question of the priority and order of the songs, which brought with it the genesis and application of the musical or ideological concept that served as the organising principle behind the entire album.
