Alexander Bălănescu, violinist, Tara Khozein, singer, and Attila Gyárfás, percussionist, undertake a reinterpretation of the extremely rich Hungarian and Romanian folk song culture of Transylvania: using the tools of contemporary classical music performance and experimental improvisation, the three artists rework folk music material, so that the various traditional songs are revealed to us not as evocations of the past, but as parts of a living and present, constantly renewing tradition, also leaving space for the unfolding of the artists’ individuality.
Romanian-born and living in Great Britain, Alexander Bălănescu is one of the most exciting violinists of our time, who moves between different musical styles and traditions with exceptional flexibility. He has worked with numerous world-famous artists, such as Pina Bausch, Michael Nyman, Gavin Bryars, Ornette Coleman, Jack DeJohnette and David Byrne – he also recorded a joint album with the ensemble Muzsikás about the legacy of Bartók and folk music. What is more, he has also worked with pop/rock groups such as Kraftwerk, Pet Shop Boys and Depeche Mode. Tara Khozein is a soprano, songwriter, improviser, teacher and theatre maker. As a multidisciplinary performer, she explores the relationship between classical singing, speech, and various vocal styles, timbres and techniques in both concert and theatre settings. Over the course of her career, she has lived and worked in the United States and throughout Europe. Percussionist and composer Attila Gyárfás focuses his interests on a mode of playing based on free improvisation and on exploring the sounds arising from unconventional ways of using the drum set. He has performed at many major festivals and clubs across Europe, and his playing can be heard on more than thirty records.
