Fanny & Felix Mendelssohn: Dialogue in Letters – Dorka Gryllus x Kornél Simon x Izabella Simon x Dénes Várjon

This programme is held in Hungarian.
Pianists Izabella Simon and Dénes Várjon present a special musical theatre evening exploring the extraordinary relationship between Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn through their letters, diary entries and, of course, their music. The performance, devised by Izabella Simon, creates an intimate theatrical atmosphere through the musical world of what may be the nineteenth century’s most famous pair of composer siblings and the interweaving of their correspondence. It offers profound insight into their personal struggles and creative relationship, while also introducing us to the differences between the lives of women and men working in the arts during the period. The two composers are portrayed by leading figures in Hungarian theatre: Dorka Gryllus as Fanny and Kornél Simon as Felix.
Izabella Simon and Dénes Várjon both graduated from the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, where their teachers included György Kurtág, Sándor Falvai and Ferenc Rados. Both individually and together, they regularly perform at the world’s most prestigious concert halls and festivals. They often perform four-hand and two-piano programmes in Hungary and abroad, and have also jointly organised and led several chamber music festivals, including the annual “Kamara.hu” festival. In March 2024, they curated a weekend at the House of Music Hungary.
Dear Visitor, We kindly inform you that during the event, photographs, audio recordings, and/or video recordings may be taken. By attending the event, you consent to the recording of such materials through your implied conduct.
The concerts of our Tuned to Piano program series can easily captivate those who are still far from the world of romantic piano literature, while they also hold new experiences for those who come to the House of Music Hungary as black-belt classical music fans.
