László “Legedi” István is a flute player from Cleja and an outstanding figure in Moldavian Hungarian musical culture. He was born in 1948. As a child, he learned to play the flute from his father, András “Legedi” László, but later expanded his knowledge from many other sources as well, shaping the melodies to his own taste. His playing is characterized by refined technique, a strong dance rhythm, and virtuosity.
Since the 1990s, he has been a leading master and guest of the Moldavian dance-house movement that grew out of Budapest. Over the past decades, he has regularly performed at camps, festivals, and other events. There are hardly any flute players in Hungary who are unfamiliar with his melodies, recordings, or even with him personally. He also strives to pass on his knowledge in his home village, where he regularly teaches children to play the flute. His playing has been preserved in numerous field recordings, now also available online, as well as on several released recordings.
With this program at the House of Music, we want to bring audiences closer to the stories behind the melodies and performances: we will talk with the 78-year-old flute player, who has been awarded the title of Master of Folk Art, about music, tradition, learning, and culture. And, of course, the instruments won’t stay in their cases.
