László Földes, aka Hobo, is one of the outstanding figures in Hungarian music. Over the course of his more than five-decade career, he has left a lasting mark with the Hobo Blues Band, as a solo artist, through his poetry albums and his work in theatre. And now, in his eighties, he has founded yet another new band, which will make its debut at the House of Music. The Budapest Blues Band features legendary Hungarian blues musicians such as Gábor Szűcs (aka Little G Weevil), Jenő Fekete and Zoltán Nemes. We recommend the concert in Hobo’s own words, as he tells the story of how the band came together.
“If someone forms a new band at the age of 80, they should be required to get psychiatric clearance first. But despite all the prejudice, I went ahead and recently put together the Budapest Blues Band. I feel that, despite my long career, I haven’t managed to establish blues sung in Hungarian, so before I leave the stage, I wanted to leave something behind that isn’t tied exclusively to my name.
Sadly, several of my former Hobo Blues Band colleagues are no longer with us, while others have taken a different path, like Gyula Deák Bill, who now also calls himself a rock singer. But much of his repertoire is still made up of the songs Egon Póka and I wrote for him before he left the band in 1985, forty years ago. Although he isn’t a songwriter, this is how he keeps the old tradition alive.
So I called together Jenő Fekete, Gábor Szűcs (aka Little Weevil) and Zoltán Nemes, who are much younger than me and have been singing blues in English for decades, and asked them to try it in Hungarian, too. To justify their fear of death, I wrote enough lyrics for a full-length album and asked them each to choose one they liked, set it to music and sing it. Then I pointed a machine gun at them and told them I wouldn’t be the one to take the blame—we’d all sing, all four of us, and I’d only be a quarter of the act.
The House of Music Hungary has welcomed us, and we’ll make our debut here with a new album and quite a few blues songs translated into Hungarian.”
