Flute and Lute - András Berecz's Greek Program

This program draws from ancient Greek written culture and modern Greek folk art. Thus, the thousand-year-old tales of cave-dwelling nymphs and a folk song about the outlaw Davelis hiding in Attic caves drift together side by side. A kind of connection emerges between the judges gathered in the café in Patras and the gods assembling on Olympus, between the punished Antiope and Eleni sentenced to prison.
Meanwhile, we dissect the nature of music—sidestepping the tone of philosophy, but following Aristotle—and not only with tales and songs, but also with music and dances. Most of the songs come from early 20th-century collections, including a 1905 phonograph recording from Istanbul, from an illiterate dockworker from Vourla (now in Turkey), and from 1917 New York emigrants.
The illustrators of the program are: Giorgione, Titian, Botticelli, Caravaggio, and ancient Greek bowls, jugs, amphorae.
