Csenge Ilosfai - Zoltán Tamás Gárgyán: Contrasts

An entire evening would not be enough to present the life of our brilliant composer, but this show does not aim to do that. A good portrait is unique and highlights important personality traits that carry a message. Intimate letters, classical music, folk music, and modern visual art intertwine to illuminate the spirit of Béla Bartók with a kind of 21st-century impressionism. The meeting of individually outstanding performers on stage promises an intimate and captivating evening.

Béla Bartók is a genius of Hungarian and universal music composition, as well as one of the greatest pianists of his time. Many people know these few facts about him, yet few have seen beneath the tough surface of the master's reserved demeanor. Bartók's correspondence reveals his human traits, the infinite depths of his emotions, and his vision that far surpassed his era. In his art, he served the good with unwavering confidence and spoke out against the bad while his life was led through extreme vicissitudes. Our performance seeks to bring the audience closer to Bartók's inner world and thus help them to understand the master's messages on deeper levels. During the production, an actor guides us through the prose line mainly based on Bartók's correspondence, to which the performed folk and classical music pieces naturally connect. Through interesting stories and wonderful music, we arrive at the violin-clarinet-piano trio composed by the master between 1938 and 1940, the “Contrasts”, which unfolds as the climax of the performance. Intertwined with music and acting, Szonja Dorottya Koltay's visual art accompanies the show in a projected form.
