DOME_SPATIAL Encounters in Sound
Students of the Electronic Composition Department at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music have, since its opening, from time to time taken over the House of Music’s Sound Dome: they regularly experiment here and create their own projects which they can test in the Dome’s distinctive 36-channel three-dimensional sound field. Now, as part of an international program, together with students and professors from four other universities they are preparing exciting, electronic-music-based sound installations that will be presented on December 13.
The Grieg Academy in Bergen, the Mozarteum in Salzburg, the Ignacy Paderewski Academy of Music in Poznań and the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan are joining the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music; their students and professors are working together in Budapest within the framework of the Erasmus-BIP project.
The joint work focuses on the artistic possibilities of electroacoustic music and spatial sound. The participants are creating pieces composed for 8-channel and three-dimensional (3D) spatial audio, which present the sounds we perceive in everyday life from a different, exciting perspective — because the creators will now artificially “move” them. For this they will use, in addition to artificially (computer) generated sounds, samples recorded during everyday activities — for example, previously there was a student who made a piece from the sounds of brushing their own teeth.
The program takes the form of lectures, workshops, consultations and joint experiments, where participants become acquainted with the technical and artistic aspects of spatialized sound from both theoretical and practical sides. The one-week program is curated by Andrea Szigetvári, musical director, sound engineer, associate professor at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music and teacher of electronic composition.
The project’s closing event will be a public concert on December 13 at the House of Music, where the students’ own compositions will be performed on a 3D sound system.
