Think Symphonies Are Boring? Here Are the Top 10!

This program will be held in Hungarian.

The Greek word “symphonia” means harmony, concord. Throughout the centuries, it has carried various meanings in music history, but in the 18th century, it found its form that we first associate it with: a musical composition for orchestra, usually in four movements. In fact, there are exceptions to every rule... we will glance at these too. Is a symphony really boring? Is it a popular genre, or is it collecting dust? This afternoon, everything will be revealed! Especially about the ten most popular pieces...

Numbers and keys and a genre: symphony. It doesn't seem exciting to say: V. and C minor... and yet! An orchestral concert is hard to imagine without a symphony or two. It is the genre that puts the most musicians on stage, and the foundation of it is harmony. Its name also refers to this: the Greek “symphonia,” which can be freely translated as “sounding together, ringing together.”

The perfection of the genre is attributed to Joseph Haydn, who is referred to as the “father of the symphony” in music history. From the 18th century to the present day, symphonies are being composed, and yet we endeavor this afternoon to find the best of the genre! It's not easy, as different lists consider different works to be the most important. By comparing scheduled, played, and most listened-to lists, the TOP 10 will be formed today! Luck also plays a part... whoever guesses and gets it right at the start of the performance will receive a small reward at the end! Meanwhile, there will also be talk about the development of the genre and its interesting aspects... There will also be a bit of mystery, with the magical number 9! Let's listen to great music together, get acquainted with a wonderful and diverse genre that is much more exciting than many titles suggest! There will be a quiz, many interesting stories, and good cheer! All of this is taken care of by the presenter: Dóra Tápai conductor, high school music teacher, and music educator at the House of Hungarian Music.
