The disco as a style of music is an innovation of the 1970s; it reached its peak fifty years ago, in 1976, sweeping everything before it and dominating the musical world for many years, and it has kept renewing and returning ever since. The discotheque, as a synonym for clubs, has a much longer history, and the two are closely intertwined. In this four-part series, we trace the journey of the genre; the multimedia presentation is completed by period music materials, bibliographic curiosities, archival content and numerous musical excerpts. The music will be presented live on site by a DJ: a mood-setting warm-up precedes the talk, and the evening closes with a special music mix that also foreshadows the next stops in the series. The first part, titled The Road to the Top, presents the formation of the genre.
In the first part of the lecture series, we follow the history of the emergence of disco from its beginnings up to 1976. We recall the eras, locations, creators and technical innovations that defined the development of the genre and laid the foundations for its later worldwide success.
On our journey we visit the legendary clubs of disco culture, including the first Discotheque, Chez Regine, The Loft, Whisky A Go Go, The Sanctuary and The Sandpiper. We get to know the work of David Mancuso, Francis Grasso and Nicky Siano, as well as the innovations with which they fundamentally reshaped DJ culture and the musical world of clubs.
We will also discuss the era’s defining television programs, such as Soul Train and The Midnight Special, which for years shaped the musical tastes of audiences and helped the widespread dissemination of new performers, sounds and dance styles.
Touching on Hamburg, Paris, New York and Los Angeles, we follow disco’s path to global conquest, while recalling the years of the genre’s rise through famous performers, major hits and enduring stories. During the evening, the era’s charts and iconic printed music publications will also be brought to life.

During the evening, among others, defining recordings by Barry White, Dennis Coffey, James Brown, the Love Unlimited Orchestra, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, Heatwave, Carl Douglas, Andrea True Connection, George McCrae, Rose Royce, Average White Band, The Jackson 5, The Trammps, Kool & the Gang, Wild Cherry, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Lou Rawls, Candi Staton, MFSB, K.C. & The Sunshine Band, McFadden & Whitehead and many more artists will be played.
