Visible Sounds – Rescoring Hans Richter
In the next installment of our silent film music series, we will focus on Hans Richter (1888-1976), one of the most original and unique creators in the history of film. This daring German avant-garde artist and graphic designer was one of the first to recognize the potential of motion pictures, and his short films represent a comprehensive synthesis of the pioneering styles of the time (Cubism, Expressionism, Constructivism, Dadaism, etc.). A selection of these films, as well as some works by Richter's frequent collaborator, the Swedish artist Viking Eggeling (1880-1925), will be presented with live music by the CelloFun ensemble, consisting of musicians based in Transylvania and Bucharest (Attila Szabó J. – cello, electronics; Koszika – vocals, violin; Edith Tóth – wind instruments, keyboard; Radu Rădescu – percussion), while film historian Irina-Margareta Nistor will provide entertaining educational commentary, reading from Richter's writings on film theory and aesthetics as part of the performance. These short films are rarely screened anywhere in the world, so anyone who is even slightly interested in the early history of the moving image medium, or who simply wants to gain insight into a completely unique visual world, should not miss this program!
